Global Markets Update: Monday, August 22, 2011

Where do markets stand this morning?  Here are a few of the trends we've taken note of after last week's market actions:
  • The World was down 3.9% last week, with the US down 4.8%.  Year-to-date, The World is down 12.2% and the US is down 10.6%.
  • Germany and Italy, the best of the G7s earlier this year, are now down 17.5% and 21.4%, respectively, for the year.  The BRICs are all now down over 10% year-to-date.
  • US Sectors: Financials are down 24% for the year; Basic Materials and Industrials are both down about 16% year-to-date; Technology is down almost 12% for the year; Utilities and Staples are the only positive sectors year-to-date.
