Global Markets Update: Monday, October 31, 2011

After last week's strong move in the market, here are a few trends we've taken note of:
  • Last week was very refreshing.  The US was up 3.8%, International Markets were up 7.0%, and Emerging Markets were up 9.8%.
  • The US is now positive for the year (up 2.2%), outperforming International Markets (down 8.0% year-to-date) by 10%.
  • Brazil, Russia and China were all up over 10% last week.  These markets can turn on a dime with power given the proper conditions.
  • US Basic Materials and Financials were both up over 7% last week.  Financials are still down over 12% and Basic Materials are down over 5% for the year.  The fact that Utilities lead all US Sectors and are up over 11% this year should tell you something about the market that we are in at this time.
